bendelThe renowned women’s fashion luxury label Henri Bendle, has declared that it will be shutting shop in face of sluggish sales and low profits. The iconic flagship store on New York’s Fifth Avenue has been the go-to place for upscale shoppers since 1913. As per an announcement issued by the parent company L Brands, the Henri Bendel website and all of its 23 stores in USA will shut down in January 2019. The shoppers can get their last outing at the stores through the holiday season. The chic brown and white striped shopping bags of Henri Bendel will yet make a statement for a few months more.

Leslie Wexner, L Brands chairman and CEO reportedly said,’We are committed to improving performance in the henri-bendelbusiness and increasing shareholder value,’ ‘As part of that effort, we have decided to stop operating Bendel to improve company profitability and focus on our larger brands that have greater growth potential.’ He added that they wish to focus on their other more profitable brands. The other major brands with L Brands are Victoria’s Secret and Bath & Body Works.

The founder Henri Bendel started out as a milliner, making hats for women, and set up shop in Greenwich Village in Manhattan in 1895. He cleverly made his mark as a man of fine taste and established himself as a brand by 1907 and introduced the trademark white and brown striped shopping bag and hatbox. L Brands acquired Henri Bendel in 1985.
