Holiday makersat the super luxury Malidivian resort Gili Lankanfushi had to interrupt their dream vacation on Wednesday night 11pm, as a devastating fire ripped through a large portion of the resort. As per reports provided by the Maldives National Defence Force, the flames spread quickly due to strong surface winds. Located in the North Malé Atoll, Gili Lankanfushi is rated one of the Top 5 Luxury Hotels in the World. Yet, allegedly a small fire in the Sushi restaurant ‘By the Sea’, turned into a huge inferno that raged for six hours, burning down seven of the 45 wood and thatch villas and some of the wooden walkways. The firefighters eventually were able to bring the fire under control.
Guests fled onto the beach of the tiny private island that is accessible only by speedboat. To the credit of the staff at the Gili Lankanfushi, they ensured that most of the private effects of the guests were recovered from the burning huts, and alternate accommodation created for those who wanted to extend their holidays. The Ministry of Tourism of Maldives extended assistance for replacing lost travel documents.
The hotel website put up an advisory next day, updating the information and offering refunds and alternate suggestions. Gili Lankanfushi is now shut down until July, and will start taking bookings only after.
