India – Nayaab Exhibition of Textiles at The Lodhi a grand showcase of Indian fabrics

11th November: Last evening Jaya Jaitly inaugurated a fabulous textile exhibition, Nayaab, at The Lodhi, New Delhi. Rupa Sood and Sharan Apparao have done a brilliant job in curating this exhibition which showcased the grand heritage of Indian textiles, its unique and many weaves, the embroidery, print and dyeing techniques, all brought on a single platform. Two renowned textile revivalists, Surayia Hassan of Hyderabad and Jenny Housego were honoured for their lifetime contribution to textiles.

14 designers are exhibiting their signature collections, showcasing the history of textiles and their inspirations. The designers have also displayed acollection of garments, fabrics and saris. The well known designers who are showcasing here are Pero by Aneeth Arora, Weaver studio by Darshan shah, Monapalli, Swati Kalsi, Neha Dhir. Jabbar khatri, Tulsi with Neeru kumar, Raymond Manickshaw, Gaurang Shah, Sanjay Garg of Raw Mango, Meera n Muzafar Ali, Asif sheikh, Kashmir Loom and En Inde.

The objective of the show is to not just to be a showcase of trends in Indian textiles, with a carefully edited collection, but also moving the crafts of textiles beyond fashion to the space of art and authorship. Nayaab endeavors to move away from the watered down textile crafts and show case the more difficult laborious, old ,complicated traditional skills being produced by revivalists who are dedicated to the pursuit of these exceptional skills. Whether it is for commerce or the love of the skill ,or the challenge of revival ,there are examples of inspiring textiles crafts that will stand the test of history, being produced by some exceptional producers.
