The 15th edition of the Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards (META)
METAis promoted by the Mahindra Group, as part of its cultural outreach programme, and curated by Teamwork Arts, a pioneering arts and entertainment company. META rewards and recognises the best theatrical productions and performances of the year, along with their makers and facilitators, providing a major boost to the country’s theatre industry, with the aim of increasing not just awareness but also appreciation of theatre across India.
META is the most comprehensive awards event for theatre in India, offering recognition across 14 award categories including Best Production, Best Director, Best Stage Design, Best Light Design, Best Innovative Sound Design, Best Costume Design, Best Actor in a lead role (Male), Best Actor in a lead role (Female), Best Actor in a Supporting Role-Male and Female, Best Ensemble, Best Choreography, and Best Original Script. META also honours theatre veterans, conferring them with its well-known and respected Lifetime Achievement award.
META 2020 received over 385 entries which went through an arduous selection procedure to arrive at the final list of nominations. This year’s Selection Committee featured journalist, film and theatre critic Ajit Rai, journalist and founder of AalaapAkhila Krishnamurthy, journalist and theatre critic Deepa Punjani, well-known actor and theatre personality Deepika Deshpande-Amin, Artistic Director of OzAsia Festival in Adelaide Joseph Mitchell and master trainer and Indian theatre personality Sohag Sen.
Along with Hindi and English language plays, this year’s nominations also feature plays in Hindustani, Bengali, Marathi, Malayalam, Assamese (blended with gibberish) and a non-verbal play, representing a wide linguistic range during the week-long festival.
